PTA Launches Free Wi-Fi and Smartphone Distribution Program for Students at HEC-Recognized Universities

ISLAMABAD – June 24, 2025:

In a major step towards digital inclusion and connectivity, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with major telecom operators including PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen, has launched a six-month free Wi-Fi hotspot initiative at selected HEC-recognized universities, including women-only institutions.

As part of the nationwide digital empowerment campaign, 200 locally assembled smartphones will also be distributed to female SIM card holders through a computerized ballot system. The initiative will cover students in Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), with the smartphones provided by local mobile manufacturers.

The PTA emphasized its commitment to bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity across the country. The announcement comes as Pakistan celebrates a major milestone—telecom subscribers have crossed 200 million, including 125 million broadband users and 15 million FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connections.

To mark this achievement, PTA, in partnership with mobile network operators, will offer a special giveaway of 2 GB free data and 200 on-net minutes to all mobile subscribers on June 20, 2025. The package can be activated by dialing *2200#.

In addition, PTA, along with PTCL, Ufone, and the Ministry of IT, has launched a Digital Outreach Program to further expand internet access and digital tools. Under this initiative, free laptops and internet setups will be provided at selected universities in Balochistan and merged tribal districts, aiming to uplift underserved areas and promote digital education.

This series of initiatives reflects PTA’s growing focus on fostering a digitally connected and empowered Pakistan.
